Even before the Amazon Kindle 2 launched, there was talk of an even newer, larger digital reader from Amazon that would be geared more toward reading textbooks and periodicals. We all assumed it would be bigger, but it was unclear exactly what form it would take. Well, now that it’s finally arrived, what is a little surprising is how much the Kindle DX–bigger face aside–is a dead ringer for its little sibling.
In profile, the two devices appear equally svelte: the 0.38-inch-deep Amazon Kindle DX is just a tad thicker than the 0.36-inch Amazon Kindle 2. Obviously, the big difference here is the Amazon Kindle DX’s 9.7-inch e-ink display (1,200×824-pixel resolution), which technically offers 2.5 times more screen real estate than the Amazon Kindle’s 6-inch display. That extra screen comes at a price, both figuratively and literally, as the Amazon Kindle DX weighs almost twice as much (18.9 ounces) as the Kindle 2 and costs $130 more, at $489.
That said, while the Amazon Kindle DX is significantly larger and heavier, it doesn’t feel too burdensome to carry or hold. However, it clearly isn’t as portable as the Amazon Kindle 2; its larger footprint requires a larger bag or briefcase for stowaway purposes. Most women’s handbags, for instance, just won’t be big enough to contain the thing.

I love my Kindle DX 9.7 Inch Kindle ebook Reading! It’s light and I love to be able to control the font size. I am a Minister and I have already downloaded the Bible and several books. One of the greatest experiences I have had is with my eight year grandaughter. She picked out a children’s book she didn’t have and within a minute she was reading it to me. My wife downloads her novels and my grand goes right to her book when she visits.
The only suggestion I have is to move the page buttons higher – they tend to fall right under your thumb when you are in a reading grip – A small price to pay for all it can do. I also download my newsletter but it’s in PDF and you can’t control the font.Wish it was cheaper, but I am reading instead of waiting for the price to go down. If you move the buttons how about a trade-in price!
If anyone loves to read this is the ticket and eventually you’ll save a lot of money for books!
I am an avid reader and was having to carry several books with me when I traveled and generally had at least one in my car in case I had to wait at appointments. I wasn’t happy with how much space they took up in my bag/suitcase or that the pages got bent from time-to-time. So, when my husband asked me what I wanted for my birthday I was happy to request a Buy Amazon Kindle DX and even more delighted when it arrived! I had ordered 6 books for the Kindle DX after it was already on its way from Amazon and because of the wireless connection they were already loaded up when it arrived. I have been using it every day since I got it early in August and have had a couple of days to read with it all day long and had no issues with eye strain or anything else. I LOVE my new Kindle DX: Amazon’s 9.7″ Wireless Reading Device and would happily recommend it to anyone who loves to read…heck, I have already recommended it to everyone I know.
